I would like to make a comment about the typhoon calamities in the Philippines. Some Filipino politicians like Defensor Santiago questioned the presence of the American Soldiers in the Philippines. I saw American GIs in the Philippine press assisting those helpless kababayans during these deadliest floods in the MM. Where are those SOB's politicians now that our country needed them most?

Trouble on top of trouble after the flood & it's compounding by the minute. Our gov't finally admitted that they can't cope up with this disaster. God forbid & let's not think of a possible epidemic such as cholera, Hepatitis A or C, 7 the dreaded sine flu. Wall to wall people are packed like sardines on most evacuation centers. Greedy & Godless business owners might hoard supplies & thus increase prices. also looters must be prevented to take advantage of this dismal situation. At least our Bayanihan Spirit prevailed in MM & most affected regions. The U.S. Gov't is most willing to help us but actually we still need support from other countries. this problem is too big for our gov't to handle. God have mercy.

Much of the blame for poor urban management ought to be leveled at the government. "There's no coordinated policy for cleaning up garbage. There's no political will to get even simple things done. simple solution, senator and congressmen should spend their whole pork barrel for project infrastructure but Philippines will still not be ready for any challenges ahead of us.

With due respect to the victims of the recent flood of Greater Manila, I must confess I have some fun when the Pasig river overflowed in 1972. Along with hundreds of stranded commuters going home from work (buses and jeepneys stopped running) we braved the strong current of waist-deep water from Pasig river along Herran Street in Paco. Why worry? I knew my home would be dry (I was right!) because the owner of the two-door apartment I rented had the foresight of building it four-feet above the street level!

LOCATION MATTERS, when it comes to typhoons. The typhoon belt is at 10 & 40 degrees latitude north. The Philippines is at 5 & 22 degrees latitude north. Cebu is at the southern most edge of the typhoon belt, 10 degrees latitude north, and is very seldom visited by typhoon, statistically once every 40 Yrs (as per report). Luzon, on the other hand is very much in typhoon path. Philippines, south of Cebu is virtually typhoon free. > LINK

We're running out of creative ideas. Let's see if this suggestion will work: In the middle of my military career, the US Navy started assigning women with men in certain support vessels and combat ships. Of course, before they came to that decision, studies and experiments were held to weigh the possibilities of fraternization and sexual encounters between the opposite sex. It didn't work; plenty of women were getting pregnant on board (I, too , was responsible) they had to be re-assigned to shore stations. One smart idea came out: start issuing "ugly reading glasses" to women. The number of pregnancies was reduced very significantly. Why not start mandating the use of "ugly glasses" for our women? It might just work, who knows?

I was watching a GMA-News video of a lady doctor on top of her car being swept away by the flood. The people who took the picture were laughing & giggling. I find that very offensive & callous. GMA-news should have included a caption or a disclaimer that they are not responsible for it. It left a bad taste for us watching this happen & to witness such stupidity with some Filipinos. I believe they are medical students living in a school dorm across the hospital. If you're reading this, shame on you. you're a bunch of idiots & what you did was dumb & stupid. The hell with you. We don't even know why we are being punished when we transgress. All we know is we're being singled out because were either small, poor, reactionaries, weak, or we're not properly connected. Filipinos only know their rights. The landed gentry and the royalists are above the law so they will not and cannot be disciplined. They are the disciplinarians if need be. All others below them are naive, ignorant, and unaware of their duties and responsibilities because they're too busy trying to exist and survive in a savage world so they excusable from being disciplined, too.

"Church sets 'special collection' in Masses for storm victims. Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales said there will be a special collection part during Holy Masses this Sunday to help victims of typhoon Ondoy. He said the special collection will also be done during anticipated masses in parishes, chapels and mall nationwide. "There are lots of things that a tragedy like 'Ondoy' is trying to teach and reminds us of-- in charity no one fails, Cardinal added". You know, Catholic Church never fails in this kind of situation. And probably all church bashers will realize the importance of our church and the people of our church not only this time but all the time.

I am going to take a different tack. Population is not a curse, it is a source of opportunity; when nourished, educated, and socially and economic productive. People perform work; more people means more work can be accomplished, where the preconditions of that performance are in place. Under the right conditions, people can even perform more work at a higher rate of value-adding per unit of work per worker. To an outsider, the Ph doesn't seem interested in this, more in systemic corruption, issuing jingoistic mass-parenthood statements and protectionist edicts apt to maintain the status quo, and exporting its best labor capital for a fraction of its true worth.

Sometimes, in the wake of Ondoy's devastating aftermath, one's faith is shaken, questioning the will of the Almighty to render such pain, suffering and death to so many of His flock. More so, when one looks beyond our shore, being the lone catholic country in the region and yet it fails to shield us from the wrath of mother nature. Where were all the saints? One can only bow one's head in supplication and whisper: "Thy will be done." Another "pagsubok", this too shall pass and beyond the clouds bringing rain floods and mud, there is a silver lining. Tomorrow will be better. Our country is NOT a God forsaken place. It IS the pearl of the orient seas.

→The devastation caused by the typhoon “Ondoy” has exposed the inability of the government to respond and come to the aid of its citizens. It also brought to light the danger of over- population and over- crowding in Manila. Most responses to aid the victims were coming from the private sector and almost nil on the part of the government. GMA’s administration can’t even provide water, shelter, and food for the hungry citizens affected by the disaster. It is nice to help to our needy Kababayans. Giving in time of disaster is the noblest thing to do. However, we must be sure that the recipients of these aids really are the people who suffered most. The giving of aids to the needies in Malacanang is more of a propaganda effort. But, after this huge calamity, the Filipinos worldwide knew pretty well who the MOST devastated among our brothers are and where they are. Most of them are in Marikina, Taytay and the lowland areas near riverbanks. Surely, they are NOT in the nearby Malacanang Palace. We encourage giving to the most needy ones. We also knew who are those giving for the sake of photo ops. If they are not successful, it only proved they are not capable of responding in a calamity like this one.

There are many heroes created by this recent calamity. Most of them were natural born heroes while others were fake heroes. Filipinos abroad are lucky. They knew more of the tragic events that had happened in our country, better and faster than our Kababayans back home. It's because of the TFC, the World News, UTube, Facebook, Twitter and the like. For instance, we knew some celebrities and politicians who were out of their minds while trying to show case their efforts to help poor Kababayans. Many were trying hard to paint a hero out of themselves, but wanting to be on the TV widescreens. The real heroes were the poor soldiers, the kind neighbors, and the young kids nearby who lost their lives while saving others in need. WE salute them.

From the TFC, TV Patrol, YouTube, the World News, Facebook, Twitter, etc., the picture of devastation and sacrifices can't be untold. We saw them in glaring colors yet, a thousand fold of pains and suffering. Small kids, infants, hopeless seniors and people of all ages - they are there, waiting for our government leaders to help. To respond! But, few or almost nothing came by. But the sorry state is visible everywhere. The pain, the agony, and hunger spread all over. The ignorance among our leaders had just been unmasked. You see, there are no typhoons in Davao). While walking in Ongpin St. in Chinatown that day in a knee-deep water, I suddenly found myself submerged in a hole. Well a hole in the street is a hole, right? Not really! It was a drainage minus the cover! The following day I inspected the hole. Thank Deo it was clogged with garbage! Every time disaster strike we always say it is a wake up call. Wake up from what? from our stupidity. Marikina Valley that covers Marikina, Cainta, Taytay Pasig were vast rice paddy field way back in 1960's what do you expect Marikina valley is a flood plain. Squatters settled along the banks of creeks constricting the flow of water. So water will always seek its own level and that level now are the streets of Metro Manila. Laguna de Bay has only one outlet to the sea and that outlet has already been constricted by illegal reclamation of property owners. Imelda Marcos reclaimed Dagdagatan a natural catch basin so where will the water go The Stupidity of the Indios is the root cause of their misery.

→Many years ago 90% of the population call themselves Roman Catholic Christians. Today that number dwindled down to 80%. Some 5% of the country’s population (around 5 million) have become members of El Shaddai. Those who claim they belong to the Roman Catholic Church are not really the “faithfuls” that the Church would like to claim as their soldiers. Only a portion of the 80% of the population who are Roman Catholics believe in the teachings of the church, practice its tenets and obey what their bishops are telling them to do. Filipinos have become practical Christians who enjoy Christian holidays. The church has lost much of its credibility as a result of the reported sexual abuses of some priests and abhorrent life styles of a few.

Those who left finally discovered that the Catholic Church does not have the right attitude towards the truth. The Church has refused to accept opposing views, adopt to the changing views of its flock and avoided hearing both sides of relevant issues. The opposition to the Health and Reproductive Bill is an example of how autocratic the church is. It condemns those who sponsor the bill and even threatens its advocates with excommunication. The reason why the priests and bishops don't want to use condoms is because they have no wife. And if one has a concubine and decide to use it no way he can get enjoyment and full satisfaction on it........The truth is they're masquerading to be holy but like most men they also have orgasms.

We are now seeing the return of the friars during the Spanish occupation when they were the ones dictating what the government should do without regards to its adverse effect on the country as a whole. Could such attitude of the catholic church the reason why many of its flock are joining another religious sect? I thought there is this what we call separation of the church and the state?

I am a Roman Catholic but do not agree with the church in this matter. "Family Planning" does not mean killing the babies, rather preventing conception. It is more a sin to produce babies that parents cannot bring up properly and feed well. I am more for "Responsible Parenting"--parents limiting children that they can take care well. Some of the problems we have are cause by extreme poverty resulting in poor diet, less education and in many cases inducing one into a life of civic apathy. What can one expect when there are too many mouths to feed and the parents are not able to meet the needs of more children beyond the capability of the bread earner. The Catholic church better wake up.

I have been To Philippines and I have seen birth control sold on many store, be it a sari-sari or larger markets, there must be some logical thinking for people there to use them to prevent larger families or unwanted pregnancies. Condoms are universally known, it's very rare for a person not to know it's use.

Why do we always pick on the Catholic Church? I firmly believe that we should "control" graft and corruption first before we could consider "population control." As long as there are corrupt government officials/politicians, even if we maintain a zero birth rate for the next 10 years, the Philippines would still be a poor country. There are so many problems that besiege our country today, but in my opinion, the root cause-- GRAFT and CORRUPTION.

Now people are turning against God. Who are we to play God and decide that killing babies is the best thing to ever happen to the Philippines? Just because of the Internet, and you lose God? Perhaps, people should prayerfully discern these issues of abortion or "reproductive health" and not rationalize as to who we can keep and who we can flush down the toilet. The Philippines that I knew was never of these mentality. Our God has and will always be the Maker of life, and we have no business playing w/ it.

And, as for the Church, it's had very little to do with social or economic providence for quite some time, perhaps millennia. Time for the Church to be(long to) the People, again, and not self-appointed money-changers occupying the Temple preaching their self-serving brand of gate-keeping, indulgence-peddling, and rank-based hypocrisy.

Immigration:
By US Attorney Audra R. Behné
Background Checks on U.S. Citizens

It is well known that the government performs detailed background clearances on immigrants as part of the green card application process. However, what seems to be not as well known is that background checks are also performed on the petitioner in a family based petition. This means that in a marriage-based green card case...  MORE
