Name: JOE CommentsI have been to the Philippines more than one time, even immigrated there in 1995 for awhile, and I found that the government, as well as the Church are to blame for the situation in the poor areas there. Only when the Senate and Congress, with the help of the different religious institutions, come together and seek sensible solutions to improve the living conditions, wages, building a solid infrastructure, establish laws for child support payment, and quit bank rolling their accounts, will the strong, beautiful Filipino people be able to rise out of the ashes and become who they were destined to be.
Name: MAKMAC CommentsI share the comment about DISCIPLINE- so true indeed, most Filipinos abhor self discipline. At a "Don't Throw Garbage Here' signboard, one can see piles of "basura", "No Parking" but look whose cars are parked there - private vehicles of politicians and government officials. Human actions and errors are part of Tropical Storm Ondoy"s wrath. If we desire to move forward, let us start to inculcate in us the essential virtue - SELF DISCIPLINE! Name: JRH CommentsI agree with PNL's commentary that the deforestation or indiscriminate denuding of our forests is to be blamed. As I previously posted up to now Filipinos do not have the discipline not to throw garbage everywhere. They even piss or spit everywhere. On roadsides, behind a tree, everywhere even on sidewalks. It's okay that on commercial district in the Phils they keep things tidy & clean but just pass by nearby slums & you'll see all that garbage & filth. I also agree that proper sanitation is not followed. It's a known fact in RP that it's alright to crap anywhere. It will take some time for Filipinos to clean up their act. Metro Manila must be depopulated of the millions of people who should not be there in the first place. Too many people in that metropolis will not solve anything. Name: Noel Villadiego CommentsLet us learn from the Dutch. Much of their country is below sea level but they were able to control floods through human intervention like dikes, pumps and land reclamation. Because of their vulnerability to floods the Dutch have a department solely for flood control. Now the Netherlands is a prosperous country where destruction by floods were eliminated. I know that the Filipinos are clever people and we will learn to control floods and not lose hope. Name: zaldy CommentsGOD BLESS THE PHILIPPINES. kahit mayaman na bansa hindi kaya ang ganoon baha. Tulong-tulong na lang wala ng sisihan pa! Name: Agnes CommentsNow isn't the right time to blame the catholic church for any crunches in the Philippines. This is the time to express sympathy towards the victims of the disaster in Philippines, not to point out flaws in a religion. I have immense gratitude towards Australia and all the countries that have supported the Philippines in this crisis. God Bless those people, and the people suffering in Manila. Name: MACMAK CommentsWhat worries most of the Filipinos is the allocation of the proposed 2B peso assistance to the victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy. Who will be the budget officer, who will disburse the amounts, where will it be allocated and the certainty that the exact amount goes to the concerned victims? Knowing our political system, we all have reason to worry. It might be that instead of providing shelter for the victims, a politician acquires a new condo unit. Huwag naman sana!!!! Name: JRH CommentsLet's hope that his tragedy will lead us to future positive changes. A lot has to be learned and many things have to be improved. Most victims of this typhoon Ondoy felt they were forgotten by our govt. Many people saying.."anong tulong ang sinasabi ni Gloria, wala?" How true. victims & their families were all left out & the palace said they are not responsible. Really? That if the people are bitterly complaining, they hinted that Almighty should be blamed. I was a Boy Scout & we were told by our scout master to be "always be prepared." I don't really expect an apology from Gloria. After all it's not her fault, however, the necessary financial logistics (which she tampered with) were not there when it was most needed. Please give us an explanation why? Merry Christmas Gloria. Name: Manuel C. Diaz CommentsObserved all the mud that was deposited by the recent flood in Marikina Valley that same mud was the life blood of the rice paddies before the whole of Marikina Valley was truned into a human habitat. Humans cannot tame nature. If we go against nature we suffer. The development of Marikina Valley without considering that the valley was a flood plain was pure suicide. Reason why we settled in Higher Antipolo. Name: Adoremus CommentsPakiusap lang sa mga BOBOtante at mga talangkang Penoy, huwag na muna tayong magsisihan ngayon at igalang ang mga namayapang maralita sa trahedya. Most often than not, the poor are always the victims in calamities like this. Pasalamatan natin ang lahat, pitching anything to help out. Be it the government, opposition, US forces, church, NGO's, everybody. This is a natural disaster that no human could forsee. This is not the time to talk, but the time to act! DONATE!!! Name: Dragonslayer CommentsWe need the simple truth and the bare facts why 90 million INDEPENDENT PEOPLE and their EVER-QUARRELING LEADERS who, as we see now are all good for nothing, don't have enough people, logistical resources, ability, and adequate preparation to handle a disaster like this one by themselves. Why all of a sudden we were all reduced to helpless weaklings after all the pompous displays of our presidential entourage abroad? We are such a people of contradictions, living false lives and totally lost from reality. Stop showing off what little we have and start working seriously to save this country from further destruction. And for God's sake, stop the petty quarrels amongst yourselves, you useless government officials. Name: Edward CommentsHere we go again, Typhoon Ondoy hits the Philippines and now it's the Catholics who are responsible. What was most responsible for the flooding was the trash that each and every Filipino threw in the streets. The drains were blocked with your plastics bags and bottles. Trash is everywhere. Clean your city up and next time a terrible typhoon hits the problem won't be as bad, but that's not the Filipino way, it's too easy to blame someone else. Name: Dragonslayer CommentsLearn some lessons from this tragedy: Elevate above flood level all future edifices, build only with standard typhoon-proof materials, require flood insurance, life boat or amphibian type vessels for flood rescue, tear down unworthy houses that will turn into debris in case of a flood such as this one, if affordable, at least a banca with roof for every family, buy 24 helicopters to be used solely on assistance and rescue (do not depend on other nations to do this one for us), instead of stealing OFW remittances, put them in some kind of reserve fund to assist people displaced by such natural and man-made disasters. There are so many things the government and the people can do to prevents futures catastrophes in terms of being unprepared. Name: Manuel C. Diaz CommentsI am sure after the flood the Indio government will be back to its own old self. Nothing happens in Islas de ladrones until another disaster hits them square in the face. There was supposed to be a flood control project during the Kleptocratic regime of Makoy the diversion channel was built with controlled gates directing the flow of Marikina River into Laguna de Bay the problem is the most important component of the flood control project a channel cutting thru Paranaque toward Manila Bay was never built na-ubos yong pera sa kickback. Viva Islas de Ladrones. Name: JRC CommentsNothing more to worry about people! In a few weeks or months it's going to be back to business-as-usual again. Filipinos will go back to their old ways again of not preparing for anything that may happen. It is the Filipino's cultural and genetic curse. No amount of expensive wine and caviar would change anything. Name: John CommentsMost of the victims cast their votes to put those politicians into office. The politicians became very rich even though their salaries are not that high. Where are they now? I haven't heard from any of them. Maybe waiting for the foreign aid to get their share? Help!!!!!! Name: Kenneth CommentsIn the US and in Japan, the time and volume of precipitation or rainfall is accurately predicted by weather bureau forecaster a day before. It's high time that the government should modernize the PAGASA. If government cannot modernize it then better change the name to NAKAKAAWA or MANGHUHULA. Walang ng aasahan dyan sa PAGASA. Name: louie lee CommentsSet aside all your comments this is natural calamity all we can do is go out and and think what contribution I offer to the needy, if we can do this it can help surely. Name: Karen CommentsHave not been in Pinas for more than 20 years, watched the Ondoy typhoon and can't help but be emotional. Feel sorry for those victims. I noticed majority of those who lost their houses, are squatters who are of Visayan accent. Maybe it is better that they go back to their provinces so that they can have much better life. Forgive me, but I just want to be realistic. They can just plant veggies, fish, etc. Flooding? looks like rivers are filled with garbage, it looks like Pinas has a big problem. Hope the next President can take care of our country better, with no corruption. Someone who is a very strong-willed person and can discipline everyone. God Bless the Philippines Name: GFJBHEDF CommentsWhat are 2010 presidentiables did/do/doing for victims of "Ondoy:" > Sen Villar = mobilized 31 large trucks that rescued 1,300 victims to safety. Sen Aquino & Roxas = Coined the words "Tulong Bayan," asking, (not acutally giving themselves), donations for "Ondoy" victims, like dozens of other Orgs. Sen Legarda = Has yet to start, (Monday she said), offering free phone calls for affected families. Remains to be seen how that works. We'll see. Defense Sec Gilberto Teodoro = Has been leading and coordinating Gov't rescue efforts as head of National Disaster Coordinatin Council. Fmr Pres Estrada = Says his help is out of media reach, in order not to be seen as political. As if that's not what he has been doing all along. Probably nothing, that's why. Nothing so far from Sen Escudero et al. Name: Sam CommentsGene said: "Gloria Arroyo said that the gov't. cannot cope with the disaster. How come Gloria?" Maybe you should tell us how Erap would have coped if he were still the president. Name: GFJBHEDF Comments4 Yrs after Katrina, New Orleans is still recovering, in spite of the US being top super power. What more for Metro Manila after "Ondoy," Philippines being, as some say, the poor man of Asia? But like Orleans, even though Asia's poor man, he will also recover. As in the saying goes, "Been there, done that." Name: Sam CommentsJRH: Here's the YouTube link of the giggly UERMM students watching cars being swept away by flood waters: LINK YouTube has a comment system. Go there and tell them what you think of their attitude. Name: JRH CommentsSo sad of St. Gabriel. Here's some good news kabayan, the Canadian Gov't will soon send water purification units & purifying tablets for far-flung regions of the Phils with no electricity. If we consider this as the disaster of the century, then, it is. A possibility of another typhoon (Pepe) is heading towards the Phils. Another bad omen? Year in year out MM is always hardest hit (be it fire or flood). The big problem now is our shattered infrastructure & agricultural areas affected by this typhoon. The damages will be in the billions. With a bankrupt gov't, how can we effectively deal with this? Remember, Gloria already dipped on our emergency funds to subsidize her useless travels. Name: JRH CommentsThe tsunami-like typhoon Ondoy ravaged Metro Manila & other areas. P109m worth of infrastructure & crops damaged. The aerial survey showed the complete devastation in & around the Manila areas. It didn't really matter whether you're a swimmer or not, the current was just too rapid. Those people who drowned (250 plus) were all swept away. Even cars & vans floated in the deluge. It was reported that we only have 59 rubber boats (with no engines) & 2 aging military helicopters doing all the work. Meantime, thousands who were stranded for days now keep waiting for help. I'm a bit lost & I don't understand why. Where's the calamity fund that dwarf Gloria is withholding? Now is the time for you lady to rise to the occasion. Be a leader for once. Name: GFJBHEDF CommentsDear Elmer Apacway, "The land, too, will suffer from overgrazing." In congested Metro Manila, and the like, applied to overpopulation, the term fits. You wouldn't know it if you live in typhoon free Bukidnon. > LINK Name: JRH CommentsThis time the lame-duck president can no longer pull the wool over the eyes of Filipinos. She already run out of all her delete buttons. no more options left for no matter what that idiot Remonde say. If she believes that she's making good impression on our people on her recent visit or sightseeing tour of the flooded areas, she's dead wrong. No amount of photo-ops can save her as*. She should concentrate on making available emergency funds to help the many suffering Filipinos. They urgently need financial assistance & massive relief effort. Our economy is greatly affected, so, the gov't should infuse more money to those who desperately them NOW. Instead of more photo-ops, she should focus on this urgent business of helping our needy people. cont Name: JRH Commentscont. - Gloria should focus on this urgent business of helping our needy people. Stop being a hypocrite, be sincere & honest to our masa. No more BS please. Likewise the very silent church 7 fraternity of aging & old bishops should also help out instead of just watching TV news with a cup of brandy on their hands. The key word is relief & not your prescribed prayers to the Lord. Name: Justin CommentsJuan K. Wawa: Kawawa ka naman! "Catholics are destroying not only the Philippines but the entire world. Because they are not teaching the real truth about the Bible". It seems you are relying from Catholics. That's good, but for your information, the only ones allowed to teach the Bible (for Catholics) are the priests because they studied it for many years. Teaching the Bible is dangerous for those people who does study for 1-2 years only then be a teacher. Look what happened, so many interpretations from different sects and other religions. People who lack knowledge will be poisoned and be convinced by the quack Bible interpreter. And, Catholics had not changed anything that was written in the Bible from the very start. Name: PP2 S. GWAPITO CommentsI did not see any nun or priest volunteering to provide food, water, etc. to displaced members of society who have become victims of the typhoon. Those who were affected the most were the poor who have no lifeline and look to look to the government as a "friend" of last resort. The images you see with Ondoy were no different from Katrina hurricane that came down on New Orleans and flooded the place. I hope voters won't forget that the handling of Ondoy happened under GMA's watch and her party LAKAS-KAMPI when 2010 comes to choose new leaders. Name: R I P CommentsHindi ba nyu napupuna na ang lahat na uri ng devastating natural calamity "typhone or cyclone, earthquake, tidal wave, fire or any other kinds of natural disasters" ay laging nagaganap O tumatama sa mga over populated areas? Samantalang napakalawak ng desyerto, pacific or atlantic ocean, bakit hindi tumatama doon? It's a mystery of nature, hindi ba? At kung susundan mo the perfectness OF NATURE you'll be amazed but comprehend the answer of over population, maybe? I'M VERY SORRY, rhetorically IN CONTEXT OF MORAL I'm wrong sa oras na ito sa pagdadalamhati ng mga naiwang ng pumanaw at pagkasalanta ng mga pananim, kung walang makakain, maraming will R.I.P. Name: JRH CommentsOnce the senate resumes talking again, one of them will start an inquiry to find out who's to blame & responsible for this disaster. A lot of affected Filipinos complained bitterly & rightly so that our gov't was not able to deliver help. Some of them got a little something in one plastic bag containing a can of sardines, a few cups of rice, & a package of instant noodles. When they go back home (if there's still a home standing there), they will be needing safe drinking water, roofs over their heads, blankets on old nights, candles, & maybe a life preserver and many more essential things. All the while, most of them can't go back to work yet or earn a penny (or isang sinkong duling). Let's not hope that they start getting sick. Be ready with caskets cuz most of them will surely die. Name: JRH CommentsWhenever money is to be made the easy way, other Filipinos will help themselves on the misfortunes of other Filipinos. This week alone, many Pinoys abroad received e-mails & dozens of appeals from questionable individuals & groups all soliciting money (some specified) & aids for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. Most of them are really creative & will touch your emotions. However, none have shown the proper accreditations from either the Red Cross, NGO groups, or any other well known charities of church affiliations. so, if you're sending money, kindly send them to the right agencies & not to these vultures. Miss Aquino your $5.50 appeal stinks. Shame on you. Name: Edward CommentsTo WDC - War Hero. All the people in government in the Philippines want the American GI on the islands. The problem is that your government wants money for the Americans to stay. I say leave the hell hole of 7000 islands and send these GIs to Korea and help a honest a good people. Name: Dragonslayer CommentsGintong Lahi: Will you tell us what you have done to help? I notice a lot of your observations on the catastrophe. If you really think you're better than most of us in politics. But how about moving a political finger where you are? Can you, Bling Race? Name: JCJ CommentsKayong mga politicians, nagbabangayan na naman kayo tungkol sa mga Amerikanong sundalo na dumating para tumulong sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo. YOU ARE LIKE BIRDS SINGING OUT OF TUNE. Lumabas kayo sa mga lungga nyo at tumulong. Puro kayo dakdak. Ibinoto naman kayo. NAKAKAHIYA KAYO? Name: Dragonslayer CommentsPP2GUAGUA: Ur "Those who hold rosaries have different motives......etc." Try digging for facts first. You tend to generalize in almost anything you say. Your style of speaking is best fit to be under the heading of "how to make enemies and offend others". No tact at all. Name: JPB CommentsThe government of the Philippines are complete jackasses. My goodness, if everyone just get their head out of their a-s-s-, life would improve in the PI. I notice tons of Upper class to lower class Filipinos play stupid to many issues. This is the end result and many more to come... Good luck i d i o t s. Name: Justin CommentsHe insists: "A natural calamity no less no more! But for Justin and Rolaz- kastigo ng dios!" MALAY MO? para ipamata sa mga taong nag-against sa catholic church sa contraceptives and abortion. Sa palagay mo ba, may namatay na nagrereklamo sa over population sa flood? It`s an insult to God to complain on his creation! MALAY MO? that He did something for all of us to realize our faults?. The people are sinners and needs to contrite. See! others called God and prayed to save them. But, in their everyday life they care less. Others need to be touched to know that there is God. Name: Noicalbo Tiwa CommentsOf all the reclaimed areas in Manila Bay, whoever proposed that, did they think first where will the water go after it has been filled. Why did the national government allow these to happen did they foresee what's the result now. Flood even if it's not raining, high tide brings water to low-lying areas like Kawit. If the government wants development it has to think of the consequence or do they care? Name: divine CommentsTo Justin, I am catholic myself and I feel for my kababayan. The Catholic Church or should I say the PRIESTS especially in the Phils. has stashed away tons of money in their respective accounts in the banks. So, WHY WILL THEY WAIT FOR SUNDAY MASS TO ASK FOR CONTRIBUTIONS....THEY WILL ASK DONATIONS FROM THE PEOPLE WHO GO TO CHURCH TO ASK FOR GOD'S HELP. WHERE IS THE LOGIC HERE...ASK THOSE CATHOLIC PRIESTS, DO YOU PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH? Name: divine CommentsCont. To Justin Ang simbahan ay simple. Name: Divine CommentsWe do not target Catholic Church per say, but only because PI is a catholic country. Maybe 85 to 90% of our elected officials are Catholics. And they break the commandments of God, and live the life according to Satan's way....maybe, if the priests will lead the way and talk to the politicians, enlighten them that greed (power & money) will not make them go to heaven no matter how much they pray, and receive confession and communion. It means nothing. Name: Sgt Major Doc USMC CommentsIn your time of need, where are your politicians? Or are they waiting for the sun to come out for a better photo op? When your so called inept politicians are clamoring to eliminate the VFA, it is the US military that was seen helping your countrymen off the tin roof tops. It is absurd to read about how your senators are complaining about the VFA is so one-sided. When, with out the US military in the south you will not have gain an inch from the Abus, period! Name: Sam CommentsWhy the flood happened: LINK Name: Plaridel Joaquin CommentsRoger Rabbit : UR "Much of the blame for poor urban management ought to be leveled at the government. "There's no coordinated policy for cleaning up garbage. There's no political will to get even simple things done. " You said it right. Trouble is how can you expect urban management when there are so many side forces in the act? Gov't tries to clear esteros and squatter colonies- guess what- some bleeding heart jumps in and/or some make political points of the situation. Now those who lived by those esteros got it the worst and ultimately dragged the others. Name: Dragonslayer CommentsCalling all Filipinos: Whoever wants to be elected president, senator, congressman, barangay captain, and other public post subject to voting this coming election must take to the street now and start hauling trash with your bare hands. Take your stinking stash of honest or dishonest wealth from safekeeping and begin helping the starved and needy. Go to hospitals; visit and comfort the sick, the dying and other victims of this horror. If anyone of you can't do this simple acts of kindness and charity, you don't deserve to be voted and trusted with the more complex tasks you're aspiring for. The people will know from this tragedy who the real public servant are or will be. Name: Manuel C. Diaz CommentsNews Item only one portable toilet for 3000 evacuees in Cainta. Might as well defacate in the flood. Ilas de Ladrones is really in deep shit. Name: makabayan CommentsLook what happened, who suffer first when calamity comes in the Philippines? It is the people whom they owe their political positions and wealth, then what's next? oh, just give them supplies of relief goods for a week or so, let's give them free calls approved by Malacañang to their loved ones abroad so they can ask for financial help and so on and on and on. These people in political positions are only focusing on how they multiply their wealth and assets abroad, and faking their political "humanitarian" responsibility to their own people and country. Name: Mikela CommentsHi PN Editor, Where is the last paragraph re BIBLE? Please post it. I hardly send lengthy messages unlike other posters here. I would like to make a suggestion. Is there any way you could EXPAND THE WRITING SPACE HERE instead of limiting to 800 max. characters only. Sometimes posters tend to lose the other parts of their messages their sending if not doing cutting and pasting correctly. Thanks! Name: Gentleman Gago CommentsSo you still think the catholic church is guilty of Pinas overpopulation, poverty, and degeneracy? Would you also accuse the catholic church of the tragic typhoon as a revenge on a massive scale? Would you say that it's a curse on your irreverence to a sacred institution? After this flood of biblical proportions, would you deny the catholic church as a source of hope and deliverance? Do you consider the catholic church as a scapegoat to this extraordinary event and glorify other institutions as saviors? Would church and state partner in these trying times, rather than have the state go it alone? Should you give some credit to the most maligned church? Name: ariel of thailand CommentsIf you don't mind Miriam Santiago, I think it will be better for you to help first our co-Filipinos who suffer from the typhoon Ondoy and shut your fu*king mouth about why the American soldiers are there as they are assisting Filipinos, you and all your co-politicians (Filipinos) must be ashamed for you are all Filipinos but do not care for your people. Your main concern is to how to become richer and richer by any means, Stupid and idiotic Filipino Politicians Name: Ruddy Ferran CommentsThe Typhoon OnDOY seems created an accounting of the present admin and to ALL their troubles made to the country. It is also a wake-up call to politicians and the comelec and voters to correct their attitudes, and be vigilant to the constitution . Nature's punishment through ONDOY should make the Filipinos realize the mistakes of greed and corruption (the vote buying and cheating), the unlawful cutting-down of trees and forests, and other environmental abuses. I believe, the TRAUMA from the calamity will propel for a CHANGE of the ATTITUDES of the whole nation. It's hard to believe the Navy has only 13-rubber boats to save thousands of helpless victims of the flood. And nowhere to be found is the "emergency fund" from GMA. Name: Manuel Vargas CommentsPlease kindly remind me again if a sound mental health status is a requirement to be a sane and prudent member of the senate? If yes, why do we have a rabid bitch running wild and attacking the VFA and the other senators are just tolerating it. We are the laughing stock internationally...again. Name: deo CommentsGuyamslayer: Talagang mahina ang kokote mo. You can not differentiate fiction and documentary. It's as simple as that. You need your kokote examined. Name: Jdlc CommentsThank you Bayani Fernando for saving thousand of lives who usually lives in riverways and mainly Roxas Boulevard banks. The components of you program include continuous clearing of illegal structures, including shanties, cleaning of waterways, roads, railroads, and other places for sure helped save lives. They contribute to the pollution of the waterways in the metropolis. The squatter colonies also breed social problems, create waste in rivers, waste that plugged up the sewer system. Without this effort for sure the death toll would have been in the thousand just like the "28 de Mayo." They should go back to their farms and improve their lands. God help us all. Name: Jotorr CommentsWhere are all the political candidates? The politicians? senators, congressmen, mayors, governors? The public servants...MAJORITY are in hiding! So what's new? Every time there is a major crisis, most of them hide. You don't hear anything from them, no ideas how to deal with the crises. Watch out for them during elections... that's the only time they come out. Name: Justin CommentsFilAm of USA: "How come the Philippine Catholic Churches are NOT doling out helping hands to the victims of typhoon ONDOY? Prayers are NOT enough to aid ......etc." Its so sad and a pity for a person who's very judgmental - soooooo negative mentality. That's one of the sickness of Filipinos that MUST be cured to improve our society. Name: Justin CommentsDoubt: If you go to Mass, you are there for the services for the Lord and not for anything else. Yes, the services in other religion maybe different compared to catholic church because we have different kinds of ceremonies. We may be bored of the catholic church style because we usually do it every Sunday, but still we have different ways to show our faith to God but what matters is, we are going to wherein the bread and wine is transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ by God's power. That is the most important. More - Click here to view previous entries
