Name: IHL CommentsI completely concur with your assessments. All three items need to be addressed in order for the country to move forward. All of its citizens must be in equal footing, then all of its citizens will be confident, able and willing to fight for the betterment of the country. Again kudos for a succinct editorial.
Name: Jun Canlas CommentsI applaud the PNL for its courage in giving us a solution to our runaway population growth: "One child policy" similar to China's. While a stringent population control is indeed not a religious but a moral and ethical issue, many Catholic followers in the Philippines will see this pronouncement of PNL as nothing short of blasphemy. In a country which has a population density per square mile that is already double that of China's, and where 2 out 5 Filipinos are now "food hungry" per SWS, it's about time a contraceptives-based birth control program is installed, or our country will continue its skid down the gutter. However, PNL missed on the other reason why our country is the Sick Man of Asia: RAMPANT CORRUPTION in Arroyo's and past regimes! Name: mia CommentsI agree with all your thoughts about the Philippines, but no matter what our country is all about, there is no place like home, where politicians and entertainment actors use their own country as their land of "milk and honey", and settle in the US or in any other country for their own safety when "national catastrophe" comes in the Philippines, never caring about their marginalized countrymen as long as they are ok. Name: Jess R. CommentsYes I agree w/ u Mr. Editor on your scenario of the Phils. but do we have competent leaders to implement these changes? Until now we are at lost to whoever is trustworthy leader of the Country for the future. Maybe after civil war that could happen, can changes our political system will restore our beloved Country w/good leaders, that can also lead to prosperity. . Let disciplined democracy rule. Name: WDC CommentsMy own assumption: One hundred years from now, Philippines will not exist. We will have political turmoil and our country will be one of the most populous in the whole world. Majority of the populations will be illiterate and will be exploited by those people in power. Our islands and lands will be divided by these "thugs" and they will sell them to the highest bidders (foreigners). Name: JRH CommentsNo. 3 - having a household help must be made illegal except for medical reasons. I agree & at the same feel guilty. I grew up with kstulongs, yayas, cook, gardener, lavendera, alalay, driver, gardener, etc. With a little difference. Our parents never allowed the katulong s to eat separately. I distinctly remember that most of them are reminded to prepare the table & clean up before supper. This is before the 6 o'clock mano. Every time we have dinner they must eat with us, no exceptions. What we eat, they eat. my parents never allowed us to order, boss them around or maltreat anybody. My dad said the candlelight must reach everybody. I remember that well. Name: Dante CommentsI agree with all of the suggestions and more. But I think it's missing one key ingredient. The eradication of the all the political families old and new and their scions that continue and benefit on the perpetuation of the status quo. The properties of land grabbers and the recipients of the land grants from Spanish colonial times should be confiscated and distributed equitably among citizens willing to work the land and make the most of the opportunity. But until the Filipinos stop electing officials that are out to enrich themselves, those that have no business running the government (they know who they are; actors, athletes, singers and the like) the Philippines will continue to be mired in poverty and corruption. Name: mang juan CommentsThis is the modern day version of the slavery practice which the Philippines government is upholding because it brings mucho $ to the country while relieving some of the poverty of their relatives living in the nation. Our government needs to focus on the competitiveness of our resources instead of wasting time to serve their evil selfish goal of dominating the exploitation of the country's wealth to make themselves rich & powerful. The OFW are bigger version of the maids coming from the remote provinces. The family of the maids get their "sustento" monthly, and care less of the hell their children are going thru in their lives of slavery. Name: GFJBHEDF CommentsPopulation control? No way Jose. Population explosion is the bread basket of the Roman Catholic Church. Population explosion means more and more poor, and the Roman Catholic church is pro poor all the way. It is not pro rich or pro middle class in no way or form. These enlightened group spend most of their time enjoying life, and forget going to church, and that does not bode well for the church' collection platter. Population control in the RP? No no no and NO! Name: JRH CommentsA few more items should have been added by PNL. 4. fiestas, 5. Filipino superstitions, 6. indolence, etc. Question, did our education & training really prepared us for independence? Today, our people still submit to tyranny of an individual; Gloria, Marcos et al or group (FG, tonggressmen). Is this the proper use of freedom? Right after our independence, we began having socio-economic problems. The 3 items mentioned above are deterrents to our economic progress. We want "easy-money" & not work for it. Sabong & gambling. We should have an official policy of austerity on our fiestas na kung minsan ay inuutang yong mga ihahanda sa fiesta. I week celebration for one saint. Last, indolence means laziness. I don't want to add anything anymore. Go figure them yourself. Name: Juan CommentsI agree with Sam. Nothing wrong with working as a housekeeper. It's the cheap slave wages that is inhuman. Here in Canada, there are housekeepers here who work by the hour and get medical benefits as well as overtime pay and holiday pay as well. Minimum wage here in Toronto is close to 10 dollars an hour. People here who work as housekeepers are not just Filipino people, there are white people here who work also as housekeepers, lots of Latin Americans as well work as housekeepers. The rich and wealthy people in manila are nothing more than tyrants who want to keep their slaves by paying them poor wages. Name: GFJBHEDF CommentsChange the mode of Philippine education of serfdom, and emphasizing freedom to be all you can be and respecting each other's point of view? No sir. Not no where in the RP or in this forum. It certainly won't be Philippines as we know it if the crab mentality ceases, and the Indians are so much more civil, and not put each other down. For sure, it won't be the same drab, drag, dismaying, destitute Philippines as we know it. What would life be if we can't put each other down like we do in this forum? Disrespecting each other? Yep, we love this bar. Philippines as we know it. Name: PP2 S. GWAPITO Comments→The solution suggested in your banner headline could be restated with fewer words: earn more, spend wisely, and have fewer mouths to feed. Quite simplistic but that’s the way the country's problems could be addressed! Use China and India as models for population control. Expand the revenue base, show no mercy to corrupt public officials, export manufacturing goods and not people, be smart with the use of money and the world will be better for every Filipino. Name: GFJBHEDF CommentsNo household help? are you kidding? Never happen. Corruption, may abate, neutralized but won't be completely eliminated. Household help on the other hand abound, and cannot be eliminated. If you have ever lived in the Philippines, and are self sufficient, able to house, feed your self and family, suddenly, you notice other people cleaning your house and doing chores around the house w/o being asked. So, of course, you can't just turn them away. Law or no law. You feed them, and the whole house is littered with bodies snoring away after midnight. All you can do is scratch your head, reach for the bottle, and Deo says, "Oh well" Name: Dragonslayer CommentsCurtailing reproduction across-the-board is just plain short-sighted. Enforce that idea just to find out a hundred years from now the necessity of hiring workers from the world over to manage and run our economic prosperity. Today's economic trend can be reversed. Revamping the education system is a cop-out if we don't want to attack the practices of teaching staffs and students alike. Nothing wrong with the present system; improve the way it's being presented and adhere to stringent student-grading standards. Snoozers will lose. As to "household help", if we want to raise their standards of living in order to be considered productive and not indentured servants, let's educate them to be licensed as such, then enact laws to fairly compensate them for their services. Name: PP2 S. GWAPITO Comments[1]→There is something wrong with the logic in the new banner headline, part II. Those who provide child care and who become household workers are created by those who could afford to engage their services. Whether they are underpaid or not is irrelevant. Those who chose to become yayas and houseboys are taken away from the rolls of the unemployed and the homeless and the hungry. They do not become a menace or a burden to society but a productive element of society. Who should be penalized are those who create more babies whom they could not feed, they could not clothe, they could not educate, and they could not provide a happy childhood life. Name: joey amadora Comments1. the children coming from large families do not emulate their parents in bearing the same no. of children. By instinct they know what you are talking about. The solution to our growing population is high rise structures. The sky is the limit. A structure as high as they can be can house any number of population. 2. If respect for others is longer taught in schools then let it be part of every teacher's basic instruction to his pupils. No need of revamp. 3. We are still in transition. the Filipinos today maybe not be as rich as their neighbors and most part of the world that is their only advantage to us. their only advantage. Name: PP2 S. GWAPITO Comments[2]→There is a dichotomy here between the role of the Church and the State. The Church promises you a "better" life after death. The state guarantees your well being while you are still alive. Name: Manuel C. Diaz CommentsFor Islas de ladrones to survive we should revise our History. Lapu lapu was not a fish but a warrior who vanquished Magellan Lapu lapu did not resemble Fernando Poe but would be more like Serio Osmena Jr., That Aguinaldo is not a hero but a butcher who ordered the execution of the Bonifacio brothers and General Antonio Luna, Quezon sold us down the river so Pinoy will govern like hell by any womanizer whose pedigree was a Spanish Catholic Priest. Marcos was a fake hero whose medals were made in Divisoria, Ninoy Aquino was a Huk sympathizer, Dadong Macapagal was a poor boy from Lubao left Malacanang homeless if not for three Kapangpangan multi-millionaires who bought him Forbes Park Mansion, Name: Manuel C. Diaz CommentsCory was a saint but surrounded by vultures, Ramos was always smoking cigar to obscure Pinoy vision, Erap sa mahirap whose brain was located between his legs, GMA obsessed with power and money whose SAL far exceed Marcos and company. Islas de ladrones history in a nut shell. BTW Jose Rizal the "National Hero" was a playboy never dated locals He preferred whites, blondes and blue eyes. Maria Clara in his fiction was a crossbreed. Name: Plaridel Joaquin CommentsNice editorial sentiment - unfortunately it is like wishing upon a star! Get real! Where will politician gets the nerve to have population control when there are gazillions of "Justin" in the populace that believe it is against the will of god? How do you expect change by revamping the educational system when there are so many "Justin" and " Rolaz" in the population who teaches the next generation that "self-reliance" is no good and it is better to rely on prayers to deities to improve/'help one's lot? If being a Domestic Helper is made illegal- where will these people go to earn a living? Most probably it will only open up more opportunities for exploitation because it will be an underground activity to work as one. Name: Basit S. CommentsAn ordinary man, VIP to President ay may karapatan kumain ng masarap. maraming nagugutom hindi dahil kumain ng masarap ang mahal na pangulo sa Amerika. tumubo man ng malaki ang unang ginoo sa pagbenta ng lupa eh what's wrong?, take a business management course if we want earn more. gutom o hirap ng buhay na nararanasan natin ay mababawasan pag lahat tayo ay magkakaisa na maisabatas ang Birth Control. Name: 7gtg CommentsThe suggestion of making domestic help illegal is without logic, and maybe be influenced by envy. domestic work is not permanent. It is a temporary stint a man or woman does.. I grew up taken care of by yaya (as many of you did). We had labandera, kusinero, gardener.. ok.. 7gtg is not milyonaryo.. just had hardworking parents who had business in healthcare.. so you have kamag-anak from the probinsiya who wants to study in the city.. pamangkins.. looking to work as 'working student'.. Now you want such culture eliminated? You need to think in terms of multiple generation. A dh parent today will have a chance to move forward.. if not themselves, a chance for their children to be filams/filcans, or rich politicians. Name: DON TONTO CommentsSpain's mistake was to bring the natives down from the trees. After 300 years of rule from Mexico, the natives became indios. Spain created the Philippines, the indios simply followed their master. A people who do not create their own country are bound to disappear. Once the Pax Americana is over; the islands will again become a colony or at best a protectorate of China or Japan. Today, regretfully, the Filipino is at his best when he cheats another Filipino. I feel sorry for the children. Name: 7gtg Commentssam: " Let us just employ the minimum wage law to domestic workers. When a DH earns as much in Manila as in Hong Kong, there will be no need to suffer humiliation." Good in theory.. But more complex in practice. maybe not in M. Manila.. but in the promdi katulongs are considered member of the family.. on top of the sahod, the 'amo' (you don't like that word) or si 'Mam'.. will 'walk the extra mile' in times of need of the katulong.. legislate the sahod and you de-personalize the relationship. i.e. 'nagkasakit tatay mo, bahala ka sa buhay mo. may suweldo ka naman'. Canada or us style will not yet work in the case of the Philippines. Family and/or community takes care of its members.. government is corrupt and should not yet get involved in the household matters. Name: deo CommentsWala nga naman palang kalusot si Arroyo and company about the $20,000 (P1 million) dinner. Granted no single aluminum centavo of the people's money was spent to pay for the dinner, having somebody (a private person) paid the bill turned out to be a violation of Philippine corrupt practices laws especially now that it was reported the dinner was to celebrate the anniversary of something (president's wedding?). Malacanang should just have said in the beginning "do not believe what a "tabloid" newspaper (since some think New York Post is a tabloid) said". Eh, di tapos ang kuwento. Name: Justin CommentsI think Mar Roxas will be a good president and Noynoy as vice president will also be good. If this will happen, our country will be great again. Noynoy to be a president will make his father and mother happy because their long awaited dream for the country has come to reality. I think Mar and Noynoy have the same good characters - Makatao. Name: R I P CommentsProphecy & vision what kind of life will there be for the Pilipinos a hundred years from now," sorry, it's so degrading a premonition, how will my Pilipino brothers look like in a hundred yrs, maybe like the ones in Eritrea, Ethiopia & Sudan people dying of starvation from hunger & deseases, it will be like that, if the people & the whole sector of governance will not create & adapt ideas like China's one child policy, and also must create or establish a new way of choosing a government not by electioneering, like for example the Philippines must establish an institution for bureaucrats, to learn more about being a leader or president (coz politician engage in politics for personal or partisan aims rather than reasons of principle) no future for our country coz the system of employing a leader ay mula sa politician. Name: PP2 S. GWAPITO Comments→Instead of caviar, the large entourage of about 30 people should have ordered “callos” instead at Le Cirque. Spending almost a million peso for dinner is simply obscene. It could have fed some 20,000 Filipinos for a day or enough pad de sal with peanut butter spread for hungry school children for several days. It reminds me of the conspicuous consumption of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette of France (French Revolution – the Fall of Bastille ) Name: Sam CommentsMark: Do you think the US would be interested in adding a whole country on welfare? Name: Sam CommentsJustin to PJ: "He's merciful to people like you." Ganun pala ay bakit may problema. Kahit anong gawin ni PJ ngayon, patatawarin din pala. Sige PJ, tuloy ang ligaya. Name: Sam CommentsSabi ni pp2: "Romauladez whose salary as Congressman is PHP 534,000 per anum. Half a year's salary for one night in New York." With that logic, Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, can't even afford a Big Mac on his $1 a year salary. Name: Sam CommentsMr. G: "After eating soul food from the White House," That a bit racist isn't it? Besides, I think Bush's Pinay chef was kept by the Obamas. More likely, they had Pinoy food at the White House, or maybe nothing at all. 45 minutes could not have included a sit down meal. Name: Sam CommentsSabi ni Justin: "Pero, sa totoo lang napakaraming masamang issue kay Gloria at puros sa pandaraya." Pero sa bandang huli patatawarin siya ng Diyos di ba? Name: JRH CommentsDiners' Club. When it comes to Gloria's spending habits, she prefers extreme luxury & premium brands only all the time. Others will make sure to economize. most of us look for bargains, discount coupons, sale items, specials, or middle-of-the-road goods. Not Gloria Imelda. Her style is so much more distinct cuz it's an acquired habit. She wants them "fully loaded", "high-priced", "pitch-perfect." Meantime our poor people hit the dead-end. Buto lang. Her recent declared assets is a damning assessment of P140 million or more. She has been an active politicians from the beginning & knows how to be dramatic in front of people anywhere. She shines when engaged in outside activities (trips abroad) & all social events (like the SONA 2009) which was more fantasy than facts. Name: JRH CommentsOh, oh, somebody just quit. Ralph Recto of NEDA resigned. Watch out if other cabinet secs follow, it will have a snowball effect. It looks some people are thinking of abandoning Gloria's ship. But it's hard to speculate now. Sooner or later we'll know the full bloody story behind this new development. What we know is that he had disagreed with Energy Sec. Angelo Reyes & Finance Sec. Teves (thieve-s). I think it's a very smart move for Recto cuz the economic policies of our country is spiraling downward & he can't do anything to save it. He doesn't want to be blamed on some people's incompetence, errors, & obvious omissions. Name: JRH CommentsRevamping the educational system in the Phils. Gloria is very good in elocution, public speaking, including vocal delivery & gesture & a big smile. The problem starts in the full delivery of her many promises to our people. I watched one segment on YouTube about young students who walk 3 hours to go to school, 6 to 7 kilometers average. In her speech she was talking about modern technology & latest science in our educational system yet the most basic in our school curriculum & supplies are obviously not there. One book per classroom. No roof & facilities. for lunch, boys & girls eat rice & nothing else..walang ulam. then, the grind of walking back home in another 3 hours. A total of 6 hours wasted on walking. What technology? Name: Plaridel Joaquin CommentsJustin: UR "Syempre ang nanganak ay ina. Paano naman nagkaroon ng mga inang nanganganak?" Of course. Where in the world is such encouraged? Cuba? North Korea? Mars? Name: GFJBHEDF CommentsRevamp education so flips will respect each other? That will be the day. The day that happens, ends a national trait. It would also end a national past time. peeing on each other brings joys of glee, like he he he, hik hik hik, ha ha ha. That's how most Filipinos get their kick of happiness. Illuminating that is not possible, as this forum attest. Relegated to perpetual.... They can create money anywhere & multiply it 100-fold. they said it's all legal. To me all these are all BS. The FG bought a Bulacan lot at P100,000 thousand & then sold it for P41 million big ones. Where on earth could such instant appreciation of practically wasted land be priced that much? Who really brokered this deal? Only the President knew of the details of the proposed plan. It doesn't make sense. This deal is rotten & very very questionable. The buyer, Mr. Lim, waqs taken to the cleaners on this one-sided deal. It went thru cuz of a perceived mineral deposit under the earth of our Phil. soil. This stinks to high heaven. If the FG will not have a heart attack soon the carousel will continue. They spent an estimated $645 each on lobster, caviar and champagne at a time when millions of Filipinos are starving. The alibi of Gloria Arroyo is that Rep. Martin Romualdez paid for it, but where is the credit card receipt? And how do we know that it didn't come from Romualdez' pork barrel? Like Nero who fiddled while Rome burned, insensitive Gloria ate, drank and got merry while millions of Filipinos starve. Stereotyping based on what the writer must have read from komiks stories. Another attempt at bashing those who have made it a success in life. Househelp ('servants' is your word not mine) do not make children of the rich abusive and corrupt. They are people and most can 'teach' life lessons to the children. Unlike your 1st world 'day-care' (child storage facility), Househelp are human beings and are in the house with the children during your absence. And lastly, they are not servants. Everyone here passed their respective licensing exams.. no? So no big deal. What you do instead is massive education.. and allow excess population to 'leak out' into the far corners of the world. Exportable professions and trade skills training centers (there are lots of them now) should be made more easily available to younger generation. If you are a welder or a latero, for example, you will be hired the day you arrive in Saskatchewan. Plumbing, carpentry, etc.. The Philippines cannot accommodate all of us.. Name: Justin CommentsGoing to other countries just to work as housemaids is like going to hell but Pilipinos are with good hearts, sacrificing for love. They always have a good intention. In rich countries where they work would not mean they look poor if there because they can buy and eat what they like. The only problem is being far from their love ones. Pilipinos are the gift to God because we are used as His instrument to propagate faith on Him. In other countries there are different communities intentionally for God and mostly workers. God has a good plan for Filipinos. Name: disfransan CommentsSTRINGENT POPULATION CONTROL. Just what is STRINGENT and how do you accomplish this? Do like the Chinese did? This recent complaint against her by Rep. W. Bello is just another joke & must not be taken seriously. The ombudslady Gutierrez will only dismiss this as another nonsense invented by the opposition. Sec. Remonde (Mr. Wonderful) classified them as black propaganda & smear campaign against the good president. He also added that there was only 15 guests (gluttons) in that salo-salo in N.Y. Name: Loret CommentsI disagree with the notion that one way to change our destiny as a country is to abolish house helpers (nanny). It is not being a housemaid in the Philippines that is the problem, it is the lack of proper standard, compensation and regulations. The government should make it illegal for any family to hire a housemaid if they can't afford to pay 10,000 pesos a month minimum excluding benefits. We can't expect people to live dignified lives when we don't pay them dignified wages. Remember, work should get us out of poverty not keep us there. So, the anti PGMA media is incensed, specially, even unto the end of her term, the media just can't get one over her. Not even one time?
