OFW experience. While vacationing in the Phils most airlines offered a $100 round-trip ticket to Hong Kong. That was during the height of the SARS epidemic. A Chinese friend & I went for a 3-day shopping spree. On Sunday we went in the Worldwide Plaza on Queen Road Central & voila. Pinays, maids, nannies, workers etc. They gather, gossip, dance, & picnic there. I also saw a long line up of Pinays at the Western Union sending money to loved ones in the Phils. While waiting some of them are all texting. I was thinking about the hefty revenue Western Union is making. I inquired. They were charging 12.5 % as the fee. This company has 320,000 outlets worldwide more than MacDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, etc. combined. What if we form our own wire transfer outlets?

I have 4 nephews in Philippines who are engineering graduates. None of them have opted to work overseas. 2 work in province's electric coop teaching in a university part time.. Maybe it is a good sign.. that there is no immediate financial need to leave family and work overseas. But I will give them 6 years.. and the 'stability at home' will be surpassed by the Pinoy's built in desire to explore other parts of the world. 6% oil output daily at international prices will not help the Phils. It's not as good as the crude oil from the middle east. What guarantees are they trying to make us believe? Oil prices world-wide are going down. So, where will the gain come from? Probably at $147/barrel but it's now around $82/barrel. Galoc consortium do not have its own refinery yet. Ate Glo is boasting that there will money from this new discovery. Yes, but not now. It's just a projection. Perhaps billions in 2 to 3 years. Another pasiklab.
