The migrant workers and Fil-Ams are not only being encouraged to send more remittances but to invest and support local industries respectively because the country is facing a huge budget deficit and the government intends to borrow more. I see no plans to slow down the growth of population, to pay more attention to exports and to encourage greater agricultural output. We import too much rice in excess of the country’s needs and harvest too little of basic food commodities like sugar. The country should bring back the Marcos’ program of self sufficiency for food and revive the initiative of the Population Commission under the old Marcos regime where the Church was a participant.

I have been away for so long the last time I went home I no longer recognized the place. But the face of poverty seemed the same. Small children running the streets begging, with nothing more than a t-shirt on their backs. Why is this still the situation? Why hasn't the government gotten its act together even with the large sums of money being sent home by the expat community. Why haven't we advanced the lot of the Filipino? The thinking remains parochial; shameful.

Filipinos of diaspora will be able to maintain their ties to their homeland & participate actively in the re-construction of their provinces in variety of ways. This is possible through "global cultural flows" of people, information or technology, money, symbols or images. This will retain their influence, significance, 'force' or power, if you will. Moreover, Philippines is not being portrayed as a mother crying for her children who live scattered around the world like the Macedonians because nationalism has been misconstrued as a dangerous ideology by some intellectuals. I think Philippines will remain a mixed powerful metaphor as motherland, fatherland, or "perlas ng silangan," "duyan ng magiting," et cetera.

If you are a Christian you know about that story in the bible before Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed one of the "amuyongs" asked God to spare the city if their are 50 righteous folks. Yes it will be spared. The request keep doing down until to one. Apparently none, so it was destroyed anyway. That's what is 'Pinas is likened today. There's just no righteous soul running it.

WDC: About stronger aluminum centavo (Peso) versus other Currencies. Would you rather that the Peso is P60.00 vs. $1.00 or P40.00 vs. $1.00? To make your choice easier I'll give this situation as a help. At P60.00 to $1.00, say, if an OFW goes back to work after vacationing the fare (one way) is P30,000 he will need only $500. If the peso is P40.00 to $1.00, he will need at least $700 or a little more give or take a few U.S. zinc-copper cents. You know why? Only in 'Pinas that prices of everything stays the same no matter how strong the centavo is. Compare prices then and now.

tonyO: re "who killed Ninoy Aquino"? You asked me my aluminum centavo worth of opinion? Well, it was a conspiracy. Since it was murder, and in murder the statute of limitation do not apply (in most democracies) and some of the conspirators were already dead, the future apprehension of the conspirators will still be a legitimate case for litigation. But caveat. 'Pinas jurisprudence is weird when it comes to violence against the person and other crimes. The victims survivors/kin seem to have a say whether to prosecute or not. Whereas in the U.S., if the crime is a felony, it is always the state who pursues the case. To hell with the kin's decision to prosecute or not. The state ('Pinas) may just concede to the Aquinos (children) that as far as they are concerned the case is closed.

More than a 3rd of Filipinos believe that we're on the right track as a nation under the leadership of Pres. Aquino. Main objective: no more corruption. However, gov't officials caught in the act, so to speak, only about 10% are actually convicted. Criminal cases with clear biological evidences for outright conviction are always delayed & then forgotten. This administration must now show some teeth & let this crook & corrupt officials bite the bullet. Get rid of the ombudsman/women (esp. Guitierez) Likewise, Francis Bryan Ang, a missing bank manager, executives with fat paychecks & excessive perks, & Banko Sentral inutil managers not remitting money. If the 10% is the tip of the iceberg, then, for God's sake, let's go all the way & convict the other 90%. Otherwise, we're all screwed.

The president.gov.ph or Pres Aquino's first website was created in order for Filipinos to be accustomed to openness. Its aim is for complete transparency. Now, it's a big opportunity (world-wide or local) to give inputs on how best manage our country. Everybody's welcomed & share comments & suggestions. At the same time b orderly, logical & clear. Openness is fundamental but there must be some limits. An overload in this new system will only stymie it. In short, no excessive blah-blahs or repetitive comments ala PNL and in as much as Filipino regionalism was mentioned in this Forum, then, this site must be multi-dialect with no exception.

The argument being advanced by Gov. Chavit Singson that his son Ronald was framed or set up is nonsense. The fact that cocaine (6.7 grams) was found in Ronald’s possession in HK airport gives him no option but to admit (and hope for leniency from the court’s magistrate). Ronald is dammed lucky it happened in HK and not in Singapore that has stricter laws on drug possession. He would have been flogged several times, served longer time, and paid stiff fines. Three things would save Ronald’s behind, but not exonerate him from the crime: (1) the amount and the type of drug (2) the intention of distributing or using it personally (3) and whether he was addicted to cocaine and not a repeated offender.

continued ...Because cocaine is a class A drug and Ronald is a member of Philippine Congress and a first time offender, he might serve time in HK with a probationary sentence to be applied in the Philippines, and a judicial fine. Philippine Congress should then expel and bar Ronald Singson from running in any public office for life. This sends a strong message that NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW AND NO ONE IS BELOW THE LAW EITHER. Anything short of this is a mockery of justice

If Dragonslayer aka Butiki Molester/Scholarslayer had lived during the time of Jesus he would have no surname. To me, he will be known as Dragon Breadth (better known as bad breadth). Mockingmaya will also have no surname and he will be known as F*ckingbirdman. Before the current era (BCE) until probably 10th century (AD), naming convention did not include familial affiliation but rather descriptive terms were used to differentiate a person from another. Hence Jesus of Nazarene was used to identity Jesus from his childhood home, Nazareth; Joseph, his father, as Joseph the carpenter and his mother, Mary, as the virgin.

By this time since the peso started rising therefore imports of goods and raw materials are cheaper, the price of the pan de sal for example should be P1.00 a piece. When the peso was in the P50s flour millers claimed importing raw materials were high that's why the lowly pan de sal went as high as P2.25 a piece the small size. There should be no reason why it remained at that level at this time. The same is true in gas and cooking fuel. When price of oil goes up, corresponding increase of gas at the pump and cylinders rose say P2 a liter but when the oil goes down the old level, reduction of price is 50 to 75 per liter only.

Point number two: driving without a driver's license is by itself a felony. The guy will be booked and his immigration status will be checked later. If the driver gives a false name, his fingertrips will eventually reveal his true identity. This poor guy will be charged with multiple counts; more trouble for the guy if he continues to lie. The race issue in your example is not relevant and so is the element of racial profiling. I am not a lawyer but that is how I would see it.

Diaz: On organized religious institution- The Philippines is a democratic country, and we have FREEDOM OF RELIGION if you have no respect for that, then find another country that you can settle in your borrowed life, where it does not tolerate Religions such as China, North Korea or even Somalia!; Regardless of your intentions, in mocking my pen name by getting it miss-spelled, I suggest that you do something positive in changing your arrogant ways that does not contribute any goodness; As they say it in America: “It’s time to get sh*t, and get off the pot!” LINK

Justice for Benigno Ninoy Aquino Jr. killed by a bullet of an assassin 27 yrs. ago. 16 soldiers were convicted but no one came forward to pin point the mastermind. Nobody because they are scared of the Marcos' secret service army and they were bribed w/ some of $billion Marcos loot during his regime...... but now is the time to come forward. Per DOJ - Capt. Felipe Valerio has the key to unmask the culprit but nowhere to be found after his released...haha - the mastermind was Marcos beloved wife... (over--pls.)

Honasan suggested that the Senate take custody to the alleged killer Ping Lacson. I thought that he smart guy because he graduated from this said Philippine Military Academy. He better go back to school to learn that the judicial system is totally independent from the Senate. Does Honasan know that Philippines have three branches of the government and each of them is independent to each other: the Executive, the Legislative and the judicial systems? Give me a break! What kind of people that the PMA produced ? Dumb graduates?

In the news: "Who Is This Hostage-Taking Cop"? After reading the report, it turned out that this cop is a multiple-award recipient ex-policeman; but due to twist of faith, he turned out to be "a good cop that gone bad".

In the news: "Scraps Rice Subsidies WB [World Bank] Tells Govt." The subsidies are supposed to lower the cost of rice to the poorest families, WB said it is not working. The NFA is supposed to sell it's rice P18 a kilo. While I was in 'Pinas from 2008-2009, I made it my business to find out the cost of prime commodities, including rice. Unless NFA has outlets where P18 per kilo rice is being sold, in public markets and supermarkets, that I surveyed and frequented, I did not see this P18 a kilo rice.

To most immigrant workers going home on Christmas holidays has always been a dream. There is the nostalgia of "simbang gabi" "puto bumbong", "bibingka' and maybe salabat for DEO. The skyline in Metro Manila has changed, the pristine river where you used to swim, the smell of fresh air, the quick ride to a friend's house or next town, the balmy air in the morning of December and January and a 10 cents Coke are all gone. Now you have to bear the atrocious heat, the congested road and long commute, inhale more harmful particulates in the air, and shell out some 15% in VAT for everything you buy. But why worry? You came home to enjoy. You might as well pay the price for coming back home.

MOCKINGMAYA| Why ask Disfransan to define regionalism when you can't even define what bureaucracy is. You don't have the mental capacity to distinguish between an IDEAL bureaucracy (as defined in the seven principles advanced by Max Weber on the same subject) from the WORKING bureaucracy ordinary people go through when dealing with the government. Go to DMV and tell them you lost your driver's license and all other documents to identify yourself. Tell me how long you got your license back.

ONE UP: Sa Wakas natuto ka rin. I can't help but agree with your analysis on the effect of a strong peso at P44.00 to $1.00 to the recipient families of OFWs remittances and it's buying power. But there is a part of your posting which even tonyO and 7gtng do not agree; that is when you said "Aquino said you are the boss; is a bull crap!" or close to that. Diyan medyo you are still showing your mahina na kokote. It's just been seven weeks since Aquino is president. Your verdict is premature. As what that wine commercial of Paul Masson(?) says, "they don't sell their wine before its time".

WDC: It is apparent you don't understand why when you said "some of our kababayans are moaning and whining out the rising of the peso (greedy?)" or close to that. As I said it is good that the peso is strong but Philippine business is not passing it to the consumers in lower prices, especially of the prime commodities. That's why "our kababayans" are moaning and complaining because the money they sent to their relatives in 'Pinas is not going far; at P44 to $1 means lesser pesos, lesser things it can buy.

Juan Ponce Enrile, the old politician who has accomplished nothing for the betterment of the Philippine Republic is totally supporting the fugitive criminal Ping Lacson to face the criminal charges filed against him. He is the president of the senate and he should be the one to initiate remedies to prosecute Lacson. Enrile is displaying his incompetency, favoratism and arrogantness to the public when it comes to Lacson. Matanda ka na manong at kailangan gumawa ka ng matuwid para sa kapakanan ng mga nabikta ng kriminal mong kaibigan, nakababain ka.

RE: SR.Police Inspector Mendoza--At one time (1986) Mendoza was awarded by a Civic Organization as an outstanding Policeman.. Mendoza in 2008 was among 5 policemen in his mobile unit disciplined for extorting P20,000 from a Chef at Manila Mandarin Hotel..named Kalaw.. The ombudsman in that case removed all of them after the complaint of Chef Kalaw was heard. Mendoza demanded that he be reinstated..It was denied, he decided to hold hostage Hong Kong tourists. Very bad image for RP tourism as the hostage taking was broadcast by TFC in places e.g. USA, London, other European countries. Middle East Etc..Who is the hostage taker...a former PNP Sr. Inspector.

Philippine immigration laws must undergo radical reformed. I think there are many illegal Chinese, Indian, & other nationals who are engage in illegal business & tax evasion. Some Chinese businessmen hire Filipino accountants to perpetuate corruption. Philippine immigration laws must tough to subdue human & drug trafficking. I do believe that it is high time for the President Aquino's administration to defend the integrity & sovereignty of the Philippines.

If you have proof that Mr. Danding Cojuanco had anything to do with the death of Ninoy you should report to the Dept. of Justice in RP. Please do not spread accusations that you can't prove.
