PNL Editor: Thank you for the inspiring message "2010, A NEW YEAR, A NEW DECADE...". With so much problems facing our country namely endemic corruption in the government, bad governance, massive national debt, runaway population growth, massive unemployment, rising crime rates, poverty and homelessness, poor quality of education, etc., many Filipinos have little to look forward to in 2010. But we must keep our hopes up for a better Philippines. I agree with you that the overseas Filipinos who keep our country afloat with their dollar remittances, can make a big difference in bringing about reform to our beloved land.

Thinking that politicians would work for the welfare of the general public, is like thinking a wolf will look after the interest of the sheep. If the Filipino people would like to have an efficient system, abolish the party system in the country. It sucks! Politicians elected to office are more loyal to the party they represent than the people in general. Once elected, they band themselves together, select the best committee that controls the most funds and then denigrate themselves into the realm of the reptilian world by wasting taxpayer's money accusing each other about their dirty laundry then say goodbye to any findings the find. Any wonder why the Ampatuans rose to power and ruled Maguindanao unimpeded? The Ampatuans are the product of this rotten system!

2. It is so nice to hear about the Global Filipino Community. The potential for this community to push for changes in our country is enormous. It holds most of the purse strings to keep the Philippine economy afloat. With amount we remit, we should have a corresponding political clout. But money does not always equal clout, not when we don't cast our votes responsibly. Personally, I have met kababayans who are so comfortable in their McMansions that the Philippines is only an afterthought. I don't blame them for the least when historically, the country's leadership has done so little for the people. I've registered to vote in the upcoming elections and I will cast my vote as one form of my involvements in the Philippine affairs. I wish for more involvement from my expatriates.

-- This new decade will be the decade of the overseas Filipino. ---- NONSENSE! The overseas Filipinos are just too busy making $$$$$ and enriching themselves.... The overseas Filipinos, just like the other Filipinos, main concern is how much they can milk the system, regardless of the negative effects their actions might generate. How can corrupted Arroyo, Estrada, Aquino and Marcos have such huge followings? Simply because millions of Filipinos were happy to profit from these corrupt officials while leaving millions in poverty. The Filipino motto is --- ME ME ME AND ME... That me-ism is the root of the problem. When the Filipinos start looking toward the country's interest and not only their own, then and ONLY then will the Philippines exit its present situation.

I have my serious doubts about the ability of overseas Filipinos to really unite to rescue the country and to clean the country of undesirable public officials by electing new faces in government. There are some 11 million Filipinos leaving overseas but (not surprising at all) only 300,000 have registered to vote for 2010. If this is unity, what isn't? THIS NUMBER IS STILL NOT ENOUGH TO CREATE A SEA CHANGE.

Two things I want to share: 1. Our electoral system has much to do with the kind leaders we have and by extension why we have warlords like the Ampatuans who rule their province as their fiefdom and commit atrocities with impunity. Every election, local and nationwide, we are presented with familiar names and faces. Most, if not all, has nothing new to offer but their names and popularity. They have no proven records to public service, nothing the was beneficial to the general public. Most, if not all, new faces the aspire to serve the country are deemed nuisance candidates by the comelec. Obama would never have a chance to run, much less, to win the Presidency in the Philippines!

To RIP of Up North, FYI I left the Islas de Ladrones way back in 1986 when Cory Republic was established and Honasan and Co. started their adventure. Went back in 1997 invested more than US$250,000 lost the investment to crab mentality of the Indios. Nothing changes in islas de ladrones. Idiots and morons still dominates the government.

Whoever is the president-elect for 2010 in the Philippines will inherit a huge budget deficit and gigantic heap of debt. Thanks GMA. As the country's people keep populating the country, more people will be joining the ranks of the poor and underemployed. A projected GDP growth of 4% in 2010 is not enough to bring hope to a country whose population is growing about half the size of its projected gross national product. While I am fearful, most local Filipinos are hopeful. Local Pinoys would generally look at a glass half full rather than half empty! HAPPY NEW YEAR.

We (Rey, Piskongmahal and I) challenged this panel before to be active for this Presidential election, but we did not hear from you folks. Unless we Filipinos from overseas are united, it will be another enduring four years from these thieves, leeches and thugs and it will be business as usual for them. What we are asking is to select the best candidates who are honest and God-fearing. Each of us donate five US dollars or less for these nominees and send the money to their particular party.

Former Sen. Manuel P. Manahan (I don't know if he is still alive) almost made it to the top. The RM Boys bloomed & Filipinos adored them. Unfortunately, MPM lost in spite of his close identity w/ the late RM Sr. Manahan & Manglapus formed the PPP but it died bec. it lacked a political machinery. The bright & illustrious men of the late RM Sr. symbolized public service & I could hardly hear gross anomalies committed. Of course, I was not reading yet the Manila Times. The ordinary person can see RM Sr. & you can complain. Now, is there a chance for Gordon becoming Pres.? I doubt it. Sen. Gordon made a last ditch against GO LIAR but it is too late. A good public servant is one who serves the interest of the people.

Educating the electorate is the only solution in eradicating evil politicians. It has to commence in localities & towns. It has to focus on the individual person's behavior, character, & upbringing. Those identified w/ inclinations to bribery must be dealth with & rigorous measures must be adopted. Morality must be expounded w/ emphasis that the right of suffrage is not the art of receiving money from evil trapos but a moral obligation & a duty to choose good public servant. KUNG PUWEDE BIGYAN MO NA LANG PANG CAFE AT PAKA-ININ MO PARA HUWAG LANG MAHULOG SA KAMAY NG MANDARABONG NA POLITICO.

"rich and powerful think only of themselves" The "poor" should have been included in this phrase. We tend to protect what we get and what we already have to worry about the rest for reasons we already know. Unless the peoples mindset take a u-turn, the country will not. This u-turn is the kind of change the country needs. I and me will have to start, then you, then us and in the end, we.

I do agree with Gene's contention that Nonoy Aquino lacks leadership. Nonoy is being supported by some corrupt religious groups & greedy Filipino-Chinese businessmen. Corrupt politicians who massacred farmers for defending the fruits of their labor are not different from the Ampatuans' of Maguindanao. I do believe that Nonoy Aquino, Villiar, & members of the national party are the albatrosses. Just like a pelican or a seagull critic (One Up) who once argued that Joseph Estrada wasn't qualified to run for president.

Why is it that everywhere I turn, the TV, Newspapers, the radio, and this link, refer to this year 2010 as the beginning of a new decade? I've always thought the end of this decade to be 12/31/2010. Consider this: we are in the 21st century (2001 - 2100). First decade of this century is from 2001 to 2010. Beg. of 22nd century is 2101 and ends 2200; and so forth & so on. I'm just wondering and will appreciate enlightenment.

The last decade began in 2000 and ended ten years later on 12/31/2009. 2010 is the first year of this new decade which will end in 2019 - PHILNEWS.COM

Many economists in the Philippines divide the country into four economic classes. 60% of the population earns a thousand to five thousand pesos a month; they are the D class of people. Those who make five thousand to 15 thousand pesos a month belong to the “C” class. Both pay their taxes to the government and live (I guess) in modest homes. Those, who don’t pay taxes or barely pay their dues to the government, live in gated homes, drive tinted SUV’s, surround themselves with heavily armed bodyguards and they are in “public” service. The patriarch of the Ampatuan clan is unschooled but owns more than 20 mansions in Maguindanao and Davao. Both Senators Bong Revilla and Jinggoy Estrada have assets in excess of 100 million each in 2009.

Poor PGMA. According RP polls, her current approval rating is minus 38 degrees sub-zero frozen. Fmr Pres Mccoy's approval rating was being kicked out of Malacanang over the Pacific ocean to Hawaii where he died when he landed on his head & cracked it wide open. Fmr Pres Estrada's was booted out of the palace and convicted of the crime of plunder. Fmr Pres Cory Aquino managed to escape after nine (9) unsuccessful coup attempts on her life by the military, & her son, presidentiable Noynoy Aquino is leading in the polls. Mama like son like mama. In due time, after being elected, the coup attempts, as in mama's time, are certain to follow.

Juster's phrase is a reflection of yourself when you brag about your 1.0 GPA (Ateneo University)=Western standard, but you struggle to rationalize your own arguments on natural law, power, & other protean concepts. In fact, your donkey's mentality is what Montaigne's said about critics like you: those who claim who have found the truth & those who deny that truth that can be found. In contrasts, men of wisdom who confess their ignorance & go on searching. You can swim like a seagull in a flotsam & toxic Pasig River.

George Santayana's parents were officials in the Spanish civil service in the Philippine Islands (1840s & 1850s.) His father had written a book about the Island of Mindanao. And his mother disdained corruption. According to Santayana, "sacrifices, tales of immortality, etc. were invented by rascally priests in order to dominate the foolish." One Up is one of the products of those corrupt religious groups to dominate the donkey.

The 2010 RP automated national election will be watched by the whole world. Why? Because the system has never been nationally implemented by any nation, not even the US. The Philippines will be the first, and will set the precedent for all nations. Therefore, it behooves all Filipinos to see to its success. Failure is not an option. The contras will always be around, but in the end, they will be trampled underfoot by the will and determination of the positive majority Filipinos.

True true. The millions of OFW in diaspora, that remit, have influence and clout with their recipients, total to partial. Such influence can reach recipient's relatives and friends. Collectively, sum to millions of voters. Trustfully, these millions, will be for the doer, the one amongst the presidentiables who has the best resume of job performance in alleviating poverty, and not for a wishful nonperforming presidentiable who is suddenly thrust into the limelight, dobbed by his self-serving proponents as the "Good" versus all the others, dobbed by the same self-serving proponents, "The evil candidates."

The 30 or so journalists risked their lives to get the truth. 2009 was the worst record for all journalists in the Phils, e.g., worst mass killings & brutal massacre of hard-working & dedicated media people. The Ampatuans remind me of Don Juan Pablo Escobar, the biggest drug kingpin in South America. He had his own designer-jail-mansion (with a bar, disco, lady escorts, aircon, etc. & on top of that for the this clan, the PNP serve as their guardian babysitters. This is better than a telenovela if you'll ask my humble opinion.

At times people might not agree with our feisty & abrasive lady senator, Miriam Defensor, but I believe she's right when he said that the Ampatuans should not be charged with rebellion cuz they might receive a lower penalty (with possible pardon or amnesty) than that of multiple murder. The Ampatuans planned & executed this horrific massacre. The grandfather, the fathers, & the sons were all involved. The Magudadatus' group plus the 30 journalists deserve justice & an immediate conviction of the all guilty parties of the Ampatuan Republic.

How could we possibly balance the budget in 2010? The Phils is left with a mountain of debt. It was clearly demonstrated by the Arroyo administration by its many program cuts & restraints across the board. Our BIR & Customs collection are also dismal & now we just rely on the VAT penalties to our taxpayers. Gloria's economic plan was till debt do us part. The urgency to alter this crisis might take another decade cuz instead of gaining assets we have more liabilities to handle. Although our OFWs help & assist with 95 million Filipinos it will be a lasting problem.

Whenever someone responds to Mockingmaya's blog, it is important that a fact check be done. I just can’t trust what this guy is putting up in PNL. For instance, any historical account will show that corruption was not the sole factor that brought the Roman Empire down. Typical of most Pinoys, Mockingmaya equates corruption to monetary issues. Needless to say, the Roman Empire had also military issues, moral issues, Christianity, imperial incompetence, and even threats from barbarians. There were systemic problems inherent with the empire and the disintegration took a century before the curtain finally fell on the proud Romans.
