The Catholic Bishops will fight tooth and nail any laws on marriage equality or same sex marriage. It would be more intense than its earlier opposition to the reproductive health care law. Brazil, Mexico, and Ecuador are Catholic countries that recognize same sex marriages. SCOTUS recognizes that the right to marry a person someone loves irrespective of gender is a human right guaranteed in a democratic state.

The Catholic Church in the Philippines has never been kind to gays and lesbians but very protective of gay priests who molest minors. You could expect therefore tremendous opposition on same sex marriage and divorce. The CBCP is the last Catholic organization that recognizes cultural shifts.

YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE NAIL, BROTHER. The Spaniards planted in our heads that only the church can grant absolution of grievous wrongdoings. In essence, they have made the church not only an agent of morality but broker of the divine as well. Poor Juan de la Cruz can choose to steal a cow, go to the kura paroko the next day and with a simple wave of the cura's hand coupled with a few mumbled prayers' is zapped clean and forgiven - thereby preserving his spot beyond the pearly gates and free again to set sight on the next poor cow. This sad practice denied us to look inward and grow from inside. It robbed us of our capacity for serious self-inquiry, the capacity to focus and listen to our own individual conscience. It took away from us the capacity to commune with the better angel of our nature. We became more ego-driven thus putting ourselves first before anything else. We denied ourselves the deeper meaning of honor and integrity and we lost the capacity for deeper self-awareness. And through the centuries it has gained roots and evolved to the very core of our nation's culture which has now become tribalistic and a pro-benefactor system of society wherein padrino, paisano, utang na loob and kapit sa malakas is the given norm. We are no far different from the Italian mafia's manner of thinking. My self, my family, my church (not my country) is the hierarchy in the order of importance. True change is a mystical path that our saints pursued. It tends to typically go beyond religious dogmas and sometimes lend revolutionary aspects in their teachings by preaching an all-inclusive perspective that encompasses sectarian differences. This can lead to conflict with the church established religious structures and definitive creed. This can put strain to the church in holding its flock.

The Catholic hierarchy must recognize the cultural shift among its followers. First, it had considered being gay or lesbian as a disease - an aberration. Then, it went against the use of contraceptive pills as an abortive alternative. Catholic bishops and Southern Baptist Churches were strongly opposed to same sex marriages. It was largely political in nature and very Republican. Very strong religious beliefs consider marriage strongly between a man and a woman. I am not sure if the Bible was very explicit on this Catholic dogma.

Same sex marriage is more of a religious issue in the Philippines. It is also in many ways a social issue. The US Supreme Court ruled on same sex marriage as a political issue. It is a right. Citizen's rights are taken lightly by PHL government. Neither are they upheld by the dysfunctional courts, the insensitive Congress and the spineless president.

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court says that "same sex marriage is legal", there's a certain Atty. Kapunan in RP that says "Philippine laws need revisions to allow same sex marriage". This Kapunan do not know what he/she's talking about. Check this out: Unlike in the U.S. and other countries where, bakla goes after another bakla, ditto with lesbians, but in the Philippines, bakla goes after straight men, lesbians goes after straight women as their lovers. No bakla, lesbian, in his right mind will marry bakla or lesbian in the Philippines. Bakla and lesbian) in RP stick together as friends but not lovers. I will stand corrected if my knowledge is outdated.

Union of people of the same sex, marriage equality or gender neutral marriages as it is known in other terms may not happen now. Probably after divorce becomes legal would same sex marriage becomes a reality. This country is always late in responding to social issues. Spain, Mexico, Brazil , that are Catholic countries, perform same sex marriages. And they are Catholics. For same sex marriages to become legal there must be laws supporting civil unions among gays and lesbians. In the meantime gay marriages remain unrecognized and men would rather prefer to have mistresses for convenience than seek expensive marriage annulments as an alternative to divorce.

Definitely! Soon man-man, woman-woman will be fornicating together. If Levi's, rock and roll, and hukay-hukay clothing caught up so easily, there's nothing the Filipinos will not be able to take up and imitate with their unquenchable inborn copycat attitude.

To my understanding, no Asian or African countries recognize same sex marriage except in the Americas, Europe and Australia. I guess countries in Asia do not recognize the right to marry as a human right . It is more of a religious issue and cultural issue. In countries where there is strong gender discrimination (like in Russia) you will never expect same sex marriage to even take hold and prosper. Like the traditional marriage of a man and a woman, same sex marriage demands legal protection like inheritance, inclusion of either sposes in medical insurance coverage or hospital visits.

The Bible speaks of God creating a man and a woman. Ever since time immemorial, the family unit is composed of a father (male) and mother (female). And God even, said, "Go multiply (reproduce) and fill the earth..... Marriage between people of the same sex is just morally deplorable. That's just my two cents.

Leveticus 20:13, If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is an abomination, they shall surely die. Mark 10:6-9, But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. 7 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.

Just because the richest and most influential nation in the world finally legalized same sex marriage doesn't mean that decision is right. To try to walk in step, right or wrong, with a country we look up to as a model for progress doesn't add to the respect and recognition we badly need as an independent people. It will only make people all of us look more foolish than ever. Train your children to walk the straight path as soon as they they begin understanding good advice and instruction. You all know this current trend is morally unsound and based on folly.

Upon learning that SCOTUS legalized same sex marriage, one priest performed same sex marriage ceremony in QC. Of course it was never legal but it sends the message that we should not discriminate against LGBT, that they too have rights, and that a cultural shift is very obvious. We have accepted gays and lesbians in society but not fully for transvestites. We have used annulment of marriage as a substitute for divorce. Use of contraceptive pills are now available to everyone. Some 21 countries legalized same sex marriage including Catholic countries like Mexico and we wanted to be like them. First of all the Catholic church was created by Roman Empire in Rome after the death of Christ. They formed it because they can not beat the true Christians that was really created by Jesus Christ in Jerusalem. Now, the gay word is not even in the Bible or Koran, these gay marriage will be in trouble when they adopt children. These children for sure will grow up gay. When they go to school, these kids will be insulted by others. It will be hell for them when the other kids ask them who is their mother and or father.

If both gay men are married how do you distinguish each one? Who's the husband? Who's the wife? Who's the mom? Who's the lollypops? You bet the one that's more feminine less macho or in pain in the butt is the wife. Now to have equal rights tell husband it's his turn to bend over.

Certain so-called moves in modernism in the name of Progress cannot be fully justified their followers especially if such moves are not sanctioned across the spectrum of public opinion. There are some people and even nations who view same sex union as against the natural order of creation as we know it and disgustingly abhorrent to human dignity. If the loud majority "honked" their horns for this latest craze as a sign of approval, then we, as a lone and silent majority will keep on praying for God's forgiveness and to have mercy on us all for severing the moral fiber that had guided humankind's last ditch to save himself from eternal damnation.

Co.hab-its. - To live together in a sexual relationship or to coexist. Most times the word marriage denotes more of religious used. Why not change the word marriage to cohabits for gay ppl. They can call things like "our cohabits rights" instead of "our marriage rights"... or my cohabit love, cohabit couple, my cohabit partner, cohabit wedding day or co-cohabit fling, etc. Married will be the normal way, cohabited = colorful way same as lgbt flag.

The point is not about one's right to choose whom to marry or marry the same sex. The point is, will it be good for the society? Will it be good for humanity? Will it be good for human decency and morality. So if we go ahead with this and allow people to marry with the same sex. What's next? Will it be a German shepherd or an English bulldog next time? Or how about Koko, the talking gorilla, We all love her.. let's find ways to explore this "love" and raise it to the next level. Have sex with her and see where it goes.. Life is short right?

Why did the editorial exclude Duterte? Afraid they might be included in the 100,000 that Duterte says, as president, he will feed to the fish in Manila Bay? I still believe one should not fear anything if he/she is not hiding anything or law-abiding person. Of course, he/she can not be perfect, a little "misdemeanor here, a little misdemeanor there" that's find. Duterte as President and Pinoys can live with that, but but in the magnitude of crimes allegedly committed by Binay and others?, aba! eh ibang usapan na iyan. Kayo mangyan!

Until now nobody wants to be VP for the supposed to be most trusted politician in the country. Why not Cecilia Veloso as his VP? Both of them owed their "lives " to some extent to the Aquino's, Binay to Cory for launching his political life and Veloso for her daughter's. and both of them unashamedly have lambasted Aquino. A blogger just wrote Ungas Na Alyansa talaga ang UNA. Cayetano or Roxas tayo.

The editorial should not fear Duterte or Binay being president. There are ways legal or otherwise the president can be removed from office. They did it to Estrada (ILLEGALLY, too!). Firstly, Pinoys should have their way. Who can tell, if Pinoys will really vote for Duterte? Or for Binay? As I have posted all these years in the forum, if a dog, a real dog is allowed to run, Pinoys might even vote for that dog. That's how frustrated Pinoys are!

Nobody wants to partner with the supposed to be most trusted politician in the country. Why not Cecilia Veloso ,mother of Mary Jane? Both have enormously benefited from the Aquinos. Binay from Cory and Noynoy himself (two positions in government) Veloso for her daughter's life and both have lambasted Aquino endlessly. Manga ahas. UNA indeed stands for Ungas Na Alyansa as a blogger originally coined it.

The editorial always include China as an evil lurking, ready to pounce on an unsuspecting preys. Far from the truth. China's leaders are more "wa-is" than what the editorials are crediting them. After going through all that upheavals ("communism", cultural revolution, etc.) the current crop of Chinese leaders are not stupid to waste the advances they gained. After all, their own lives will be imperiled too, if they wage war. In reality China (being an ancient civilization) can be likened to an absentee landowners and he's back to claim his property he had long neglected (there are many of those in the Philippines) who found his property is illegally occupied by "informal settlers". As long as they respect the "right of way" of the rest of the World, "OK lang 'yan 'pare ko". If you understand what I mean.

You see people, China had been bullied by just about everybody (Japan, the U.S., the U.K. Portugal). "I can't take it anymore!" says China's scream. So the chance it got, it bought and make all the war armaments money can buy. Imagine a Pinoy, who can hardly feed his family one meal a day, went on to be an OFW and get his "revenge" with his earnings from "mag-Saudi ka 'pare" by splurging during his balikbayan trip on McDo, Pizza Hut, Dunkin' donuts, KFC", food his family can only watch before that others ate. China, OFW prapreho, right? You can bet your last aluminum centavo that, that OFW will not start slapping people with his wad of "dollar, pound, yen, lira, riyal, etc" as China would not, too. If you understand what I mean.

Someone took offense with the statement that most writers here find it fashionable to magnify our shortcoming more than accentuating the positives. We were critical of our educational system yet we survived and compete with whites in the US , Canada, Europe, Middle East and even in Australia. Someone said we should desist from comparing ourselves with the least but with the best only when more advanced countries have larger GDPs and technological advanced. We compare matters that are similar but never dissimilar. Where is the logic here? We should be PROUD of what we have achieved even if they were baby steps.

Someone put a long laundry list of what the country should be doing. All require the elements of time and money. Damage to the environment is self inflicted because of population growth and business activities. Even in the US some legislators do not believe in global warming. We should not be comparing ourselves with the more progressive economies because they have resources that we don't have. They are adults and we are still in diapers, figuratively speaking.
