Don't blame the Filipino people, collectively, for Mary Jane's misfortune. it is the system, primarily, which causes it. in the first place, she wouldn't have aspired to go overseas and get hooked if there were good jobs in the Philippines. it may be difficult, but, a good start to fight our rotten system is to start with ourselves. NBI to go after MJV's recruiters. Damn right, NBI! But do it before another victim is uselessly sacrificed in the name of greed. There are some lessons to be learned here, though. For starters, try to know as much as you can about people you're pledging your money/house/farm/family, and now, maybe even your life, however intense is your desire to work overseas. Stuff for your personal needs must not become disorganized clutter. "Piggybacked" luggage must be thoroughly checked by the traveler to make sure it's all legal stuff. In every host country, Laws are made and posted everywhere for the traveling public to notice.

There are certain questions that needed to asked and answered with this Veloso case. If the quantity of heroin, were cleverly concealed in the luggage, did she do it on purpose? If she did not, who did? If she did with the intention to sell, she must have a contact list in her cell phone or names living in Indonesia written in a small sheet of paper. A dead corpse and a man holding a gun is not conclusive that the man was the shooter.

The proposal to hire the best lawyers raised from our local law schools will never be attracted to defend OFWs who had violated the host country's laws on drugs, murders and human rights abuses by their employers for the very simple reason that there is no money large enough to motivate these lawyers. Let us stop dreaming and be pragmatic ! Volunteer groups that provide pro bono legal aid are non-existent in the country.

On the other hand, the other form of love demands concern and immeasurable sympathy, pleading , " I hate the act but I love the person." JRH: There's no way, a legal cream of the crop can be formed in Pinas to defend and protect OFWs and other Pinoys in trouble because when they practice law in the PH, it's the power of the macaroons that works not their brains. There is so much hand wringing in this case of the doomed woman. Then there is the humiliating feeling of helplessness as a Nation for the PHL. Kawawa na yong Babae kawawa pa yong Bansa. And to think that this whole incident could happen again! The PHL should start using EXECUTION TOO for drug offenses. And filipinos should speak out for Justice instead of listening to Religious and Human Rights anti-death penalty advocates. It's easy to be anti-Death penalty if you were not the victim or the citizen of a country facing humiliation. Over & over again the PHL is on the receiving end of disputes. So many sad stories -- and yet nobody talk about the fact that Veloso was a trafficker- albeit allegedly a naïve "mule' and supposedly a melodramatic victim of our society. Nonetheless, she must be aware of the evil of DRUGS and how we have been spending so much resources trying to eradicate it. IF Veloso is pardoned becx of the intercession of the RP government-- then forget programs curbing drugs in our country! In the news: "Laude Is Asking P200 Million In Moral And Exemplary Damages...". Although, it's only about $4 Million. But the issue is not even money yet. First, the Marine had to be found guilty in criminal case (killing), then the civil case. Since it will be 2nd degree homicide (usually punishable by 4 years or less) even in out of Court settlement (without criminal and civil trial) Laude will not get that kind of settlement. Laude's lawyer is just "applying" Labor Union's strategy in negotiating: Ask for more and "let's meet in the middle". It will not work that way. As I said as Pinoy saying goes "ang naghahangad ng kagitna, sansalop ang nawawala". Don't be greedy. A couple of million pesos will probably work.

Binay reportedly asked Panfilo Lacson if he would be interested to run as Binay's VP. Even if they win this would be the beginning of the end for Binay. The Vice-President's office is only a "Heartbeat away" from the President's. And we all know that Lacson is a peaceful, moral man who would not resort to violence no matter what.
