Heidi Mendoza to head
UN's internal oversight services
UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 13 (PNA/Xinhua) -- The United Nations General
Assembly approved the appointment of Heidi Mendoza, top auditor of the
Philippines, as the new head of its internal oversight body, the Office of
the Internal Oversight Services (IOS) said.
Mendoza, who succeeds Carman Lapointe of Canada, will serve as
undersecretary-general for IOS for a five-year non-renewable term.
In a statement, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the General
Assembly's approval of the appointment.
Mendoza has been Commissioner of the Commission of Audit (COA) of the
Philippines since 2011. She also chaired an external auditing board for the
Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization and
International Labor Organization.
According to the UN, Mendoza has over 20 years of service in government
particularly in the field of audit, investigation, fraud examination,
anti-corruption and integrity advocacy.
She worked previously as consultant for the Asian Development Bank and the
Australian Agency for International Development.
The UN's Office of Internal Oversight Services is the internal oversight
body of the United Nations. Established in 1994, the office assists the
Secretary-General in fulfilling his oversight responsibilities in respect of
the resources and staff of the UN through the provision of audit,
investigation, inspection, and evaluation services. (PNA/Xinhua)
